SUTENT is used to treat advanced kidney cancer (advanced renal cell carcinoma or RCC).

If RCC has spread to other parts of the body, there are drug treatments available.
Chemotherapy and radiation do not always work in RCC that has spread. Drugs called
cytokines may be used. There are 2 different cytokines for RCC:
- Interleukin-2 (IL-2)
- Interferon alpha (IFNα)
Cytokines stimulate the immune system. Then the immune system can attack cancer
cells the way that it attacks an infection. These drugs are given under the skin,
into muscle, or into a vein. This is most often done in a hospital or clinic.
There are drugs called multi-kinase inhibitors to treat RCC that has spread. Patients
can take some of these drugs by mouth. Multi-kinase inhibitors are anticancer drugs
that are not chemotherapies. These drugs may slow or stop some cancers. They block
2 basic processes that cause tumors to grow and spread. One of these drugs is SUTENT
®.
You can learn more about how SUTENT works in the next section.
There are 2 other types of drugs for RCC that also affect tumor cell growth. One is called a vascular endothelial growth factor–specific angiogenesis inhibitor, and the other is a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor.
