SUTENT is used to treat GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor). This is a rare cancer of the stomach, bowel, or esophagus. SUTENT is used when the medicine Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate) did not stop the cancer from growing or when you cannot take Gleevec.
Gleevec is a registered trademark of Novartis AG.

Several treatment options are available for patients with GIST. Knowing what they
are may help you face GIST.
Surgery is most often used to treat GIST. If the tumor is small, the surgeon can
remove it all at once. Chemotherapy and radiation are also used sometimes, but they
do not always work in GIST.
If GIST has spread, then it is more difficult to treat. More than one surgery may
be needed. The doctor may treat the tumor or tumors with special drugs after surgery.
We will talk more about these drug treatments in the next section.
